Fires on the Plain faithfully draws events and dialogue from the award-winning novel written by Shohei Ooka, a Japanese POW captured in the Philippines, where the story is set. Like the book, the film opens with a literal slap in the face; given what’s coming, a kick in the gut might be even more appropriate. Fires on the Plain is set on the island of Leyte in the Philippines during World War II, where the Japanese army is disintegrating under the hammer blows of the American landings. Within this broader disintegration is another, that of a single human being, Private Tamura.

自主制作戦争映画「明日への伝令」竹の会短編作品 - Duration: Take no kai , views. fires of the plain deals with taboo subjetcs for japanese culture such as the surrender of soldiers in the time of war and cannabalism, but there is a sense of honesty and reality in the portrayal %.

Participants in war witness the capacity of humanity and, the survivors, are burdened with the inner struggles of wartime memories. Ooka Shohei’s major anti-war novel, Fires on the Plain, portrays the degradation of the surviving Japanese . Fires on the Plain is the other side of that story, showing the men who might be on the receiving end of the movie hero's bullets. It's a harrowing wake-up call. It's a harrowing wake-up call. War may always be hell, but it's not often that we experience it burning this coldly.
